A New Season

We're back at it again, there are 3 new baby calves in the field, the crops are starting to come up, and the lilacs around the farm are budding and will soon be in full bloom!

A year has gone by since I chose to take on this task of offering quality meat at a reasonable rate, an ensuring the farmers are fully compensated.  Its been an exciting journey and keeps getting more exciting as I learn more about what it takes to offer NUTRITIOUS meat and how to measure that and how to ensure the integrity of the meat. Its very disheartening to me that people throw around the word ORGANIC so easily, I've spoken to the OCPP (governing body in Ontario) about how there is a mis conception that the title organic doesnt ensure nutrition, there are so many loop holes and it doesnt speak anything of buying local... So many variations on this latest green, local, health craze that has been going on. And dont get me wrong- All are good, but I think there needs to be an understanding of whats NUTRITIOUS, its all a stepping stone to understanding more about whats in your food, and more importantly waht ISNT in your food.

In the coming blog posts I will show you why it is ESSENTIAL that the basis of nutrition is covered and why its so important these days and what can be done about it, what most people are missing in their diet and why. These days getting all the food groups covered just wont cut it. As one of the calcium pill commercials states on TV, the amount of food you'd have to eat to get your daily dose of calcium is astronomical and unrealistic. Which goes to show we are essentially STARVING our body of nutrients, and packing it full of calories, with that being said is it any SURPRISE the state of health our world is in???

Until next time - think about MICRO Nutrients - the building blocks to your future, a VIBRANT FUTURE

crop rotation

What is it? and WHY do you care

think about it this way, the reason that there are pesticides and fertilizers that end up having harmful effects on crops and the earth in the long run is because farmers are pumping out as MUCH of one crop as they can, corn farmers or wheat farmers etc, what happens is every crop takes from the soil something and also gives back to the soil, if you continue to farm one crop (mono culture) then the soil always gives and receives the same thing, and is therefore out of balance!!

What organic farmers do to build nutrients in soil is ROTATE the crops and farm various cultures (types of crops) for example, corn sucks the nitrogen from the soil, while red clover and even soy beans take nitrogen from the air and feed it back into the soil. So by rotating the crops you keep the soil nutrients high, take from it one year and give back the next!!!

Im sure you've heard it said its ALL about BALANCE!
well here is a new take on balance - one that will help you understand why there is significantly less nutrients in our food today!!!

have a healthy and prosperous day!

The health Confusion...

What is it...
what is healthy?

these amoung many other questions are things people ask themselves on a daily basis, and with all this marketing being THRUST at us TELLING us what is and isnt healthy for us, not to mention our whole medical system is about someone else telling us what is best for our bodies.

Think about this - your walking down the cereal isle and you see "organic corn flakes" so you think, well MUST be good for me....

Lets break it down, organic means that there are no pesticides, hormones, drugs, and sometimes no genetically modified ingredients. It doesnt mean no sugar, no fat etc.

So you can have organic CAKE but its still going to have all those calories of fat in it. Its that distinction that needs to be made.

Organics has become so much of a marketing tool - I URGE consumers to really look beyond it, a common rule my dad always said if its more than 5 ingredients, you might think twice, if you cant read the ingredients or dont know what they are then dont think twice cuz it wont be nice!

Best of luck!

The CRAZY standards for Organics!!

Well... Ive learned more information on the American standards for organic meat,
from my understanding an animal can be called organic as long as it hasnt been injected with steroids 30 days before slaughter!!!

This is insanity!!! anyone with a couple brain cells can see that the steroids are still being injected and 30 days isnt going to stop them from having an effect on the animals body and subsequently our bodies!

What do steroids in meat do to us? Well think of it this way whatever steroids do to people thats what its doing to the animal, breaking down tissue, creating a whole lot of meat that has no nutritional value in terms of minerals etc, so the quality is bad to begin with and secondly its like taking second hand steroids!

My main concern is that these standards are out there, and people who do not educate themselves about this are being fooled by the whole system, even though it says organic its not the ultimate test for food health. You can still have cornflakes that say organic and that could be totally true, the sugar is organic, the corn is organic, it still doesnt mean that you should be eating that much sugar!!!

DO YOUR RESEARCH - I will do my best to post provoking questions and thoughts so that people have questions to ask and outlets to find the information, if you are concerned,
Ask a farmer about his process, what he puts in the animals, what he doesnt put in the animals, what he does when they are sick, and make sure hes treating them humanely!
Its not easy to be totally organic, there is alot of care and effort put into it, and so there now are a LOT of major corporations out there who are realizing the buzz that is created around the "organic" buzz word, on top of this, governments cant afford to put any major grocery chain out of business, or major food producers so the standards will change in a way that suites them.
- make sense? see how it all fits together?

Until Next time
